The Power of Antioxidants
-Reader's Digest | The Healing Power of Vitamins, Minerals and Herbs
Although Oxygen is essential for life, it can have adverse effects on your body. In the normal process of using oxygen, chemical changes occur that create reactive unstable oxygen molecules called free radicals, which can damage cells and structures within cells, including genetic material (DNA). Free radicals (see article.) also may form in response to external factors such as cigarette smoke and alcohol, pollutants such as nitrogen oxide and ozone, and ultraviolet lights and other forms of radiation, including X-rays. If the genetic material in cells is affected by free radicals and not repaired, it can be replicated in new cells, contributing to cancer and other health problems. Free radicals may also weaken artery walls, allowing fatty deposits that can lead to heart disease to collect.
However, cells have special agents for combating free radicals and repairing molecular damage. these free-radical fighters are called antioxidants. A great deal of recent research suggests that antioxidants may play important roles in preventing or delaying heart disease, cancer, and other ills, and may even halt the damage to cells, thereby slowing the effects of aging.
Vitamin C and E are perhaps the best-known antioxidants. The mineral selenium (example of selenium) is also an antioxidant, as are carotenoids such as beta-carotene and lycopene. Enzymes and certain other compounds such as glutathione, manufactured by the cells themselves also function as antioxidants. Some experts now thing that a number of other substances, including certain herbs, may act as antioxidants as well. For example, gree tea, grape seed extract, and ginkgo biloba (among others) are all thought to have antioxidant properties

Making the Most of My Day Off
Damn! I've been so restless the rest of the week. Good thing my boss moved my day-off from Sunday to Saturday. I need some energy charging. Besides, I shouldn't have the same day-off as my assistant manager. Wala nang maiiwan dito sa Caltex.
Anyway, the rest of the week is really tiring and stressful. Not to mention I'm lacking sleep. Yes. I sleep so early at around 2a.m. Not very unusual, but with the work I have I really have to have complete rest. Good thing today, I slept the whole morning till mid-afternoon. Charging up as much as I can. It was really great coz it was raining so hard. I didn't have to turn on the A/C and let the wind come inside my room. It was really cool! It's like the natural A/C. The opportunity cost though is I had to skip breakfast and lunch. I wasn't really planning on eating anything today. Besides, I'm already energized. hahahaha!
Right now, I'm at Caltex. I still have obligations here. I'm gonna hand-out paychecks to my employess. Which I will do for the second time. Yes. And I think I'm getting my first paycheck today which I'm going to use on Wednesday. I'm going home to Davao on Wednesday to have my haircut and watch TWILIGHT. I'm gonna stay there for like a few days, but then go back here afterwards.
I guess that's all I could say for now. I somewhat drained of thoughts to type.

To those who do not, well, find it out if you're interested. I'm somewhat the 2nd manager since trainee pa naman ako, i only handle small things. tapos the big things are handled by the manager talaga.kanina, i was taught how to unload a tanker. i was taught about how important drops are, how important that we should always keep an eye on the driver para walang daya na mangyari. kasi sometimes, driver do stupid things such as yung magnanakaw sila ng gasolina sa tanker. it happens sometimes. so tinuro din sa akin kanina kung gaano dapat karami ang laman ng tanker, kung sunod pa talaga siya sa inorder namin. masaya ako kasi ang dami ko nang natututunan sa temporary job ko. oh and yea. i forgot, marunong na din ako mag use ng gas pump. i mean, marunong na ako maglagay ng gasolina sa sasakyan. yes! sometimes, pag sobrang busy sa forecourt ng gasoline station, eh tumutulong na ako sa pag gagasolina. hehehehe!!

Black Bug Attack
You know what black bugs are? Rice Field Shits [Insects] that emits a strong odor. they come in thousands flying around lighted area. bwisit. nasira ang mood sa ganda ng gabi. tsk!

Depositing my First Hundred Thousand
Alright! Today was another tutorial from my boss. He taught me how to write a check, how to check a check, and how to write a deposit slip. ;)
Kala ko mahirap, di naman pala. medyo nakakapagod nga lang kasi nga you have to double check everything just to make sure. lalo na we're handling so much money. ((sorry kung di na ako nag-eenglish. medyo i'm brain-drained. I'm so stressed kasi nawala iPod ko))
So anyway, after the lessons, tito jerry handed me the money worth P100,000+. oh yea baby. that big. i really felt I'm rich. hahahaha! then after that i went to the bank to deposit. medyo snub ang teller sa akin. but it's OK. she wasn't beautiful naman eh. galing din ng guard ng banko. he handed me #40 para ako mauna matawag. i dunno why. but well, i guess they know the family. which makes it more easier for us. lol. i love the influence.. :)
so there baby. soon, the money will be mine. JK. libre lang mangarap. i guess that's it for today.
oh yea. more info. dad's coming. nah. *sigh*

OK! It's Nov. 11. I'm really getting the hang of my job. Yes. It's now a job and not work. I'm getting payed. I get a month's salary of P3500. I guess that's enough for a student like me. (My greedy side wants P5000. hahahaha!) Alright, for a few weeks many has change about me. I feel a little lighter which means i lost some weight. Not big weight though. just some fats are gone. I think i lost about 10 pounds. not really sure. right now, i control my food intake. though i get side-track sometimes. My goal for 8 months is to lose 100 pounds. even if it means taking up Xenical, going to the gym everyday, jogging every morning [if it's not raining], depriving myself of food i really want, etc. etc. Another thing new is that I'm more responsible now. Yes. I get up really early in the morning to prepare for my job. to prepare for the day. I really have to work hard. Have to save money coz I wanna come to Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand on January.
On the other, it's no fun here. This is what I call, the fun-deprived town! oh yes! you can never see fun anywhere unless your perception of fun is to cut grass, to climb trees, to do this and that. nah uh. not my kind of fun. nope. another thing is. my relatives. not everybody. just one particular family. i don't wanna mention names. lol. she really or rather, they really think i'd envy them for their new things such as this and that. nope. I won't. That's so petty.
It's raining outside. again. and it's not just drizzles. when i say rain. heavy rain. really really heavy. it's been raining for days. wait. no. earlier, it was hot. really hot. i mean extremely hot. sorry for jumping from one topic to another. my mind isn't really organized at the moment. can' think straight. due to i guess. ULTIMATE BOREDOM!
Anyway, I'm planning on going back to Davao next Saturday if will text me about the cotillion. Well, still crossing my fingers they wouldn't text. :) yes. i have reasons. which for now i couldn't disclose to everyone reading. :) adios. it's almost 11.

It's Raining
Damn! It's been raining for 4 days now. And it isn't just drizzles. It's really heavy rain and it's really dark. I'm inside my office right now, watching the rain outside as it pours. My head aches because of the smell of gasoline entering the small area in my so-called office. I guess I'm never used to gasoline scent. lol. My employees are running outside back and forth. Are they playing in the rain? No. They're not. They're getting something here and bringing them there.Seeing my employees makes me think if I'm a good boss. lol. The word boss. Still i haven't got the hang of it. Hearing my employees call me "sir" makes me shudder. I'm to young to be called "sir" but at the back of my mind, I feel like I'm the authority. Well, I am! Besides, I'm the nephew of the owner. I'm part of the bigger family. Outside is not dark anymore. Lights are illuminating the surroundings except my office. I didn't turn on the switch. I don't feel like seeing the light here. I don't want my eyes to react to the light. (am i even using the correct words/terms?)
To be honest, i miss Davao so much. The scorching heat. well, not really scorching but the heat. As i've said, it's mostly rain here. The sun only comes out for a few minutes then.. BLAM! RAIN again. But that just not the one i'm missing in Davao. I miss my friends. My special someone, my room, the house, the malls, the cinema and a lot of things.
Well, i guess this is my "reward" for flunking chemistry 2 times in a row. Oh yea. I'm still sticking with my goal. to lose a few pounds when i'm here. Yes, i'm trying to control my food intake. I have been eating less since Monday. Who could ever thought that i get stuffed with just a cup of rice. Though i can't stop eating small chocolate balls. They're really yummy. Can't resist. hahahahaha!
I can't wait to go home. I wanna sleep. my head hurts like hell right now. I've been in front of the computer for like 11 hours. Damn! I can't do anything about it coz I'm "working". Though I've never really seriously worked. I just check some papers this and that. Instruct to do this and that. Supervisor stuff. but not really on the field much. I'm just here sitting in my office. or let say the owner's office. doing something in front of the computer. sleep a little. blah blah blah.
this isn't the work i want. i want to be a nurse. not a manager. see. i could never be a good manager.
here i go again. i'm suppose to be talking about the rain outside.
anyway, my shift is almost done. i have to go.

Obama is the New US President
A few hours ago, Barack Obama was declared the new and the 44th U.S. President of USA with a landslide victory over Senator John McCain. His win is historic because Obama "is" the first Black President to lead the whole world. As we all remember before, America was in racial discrimination against the Blacks. And now, a black is leading the world. McCain, after his defeat, called his former rival to concede defeat, ending his 10yr quest for the white house. President Obama and VP Joseph Biden is taking oath on Jan. 20, 2009.Everyone is affected by the US elections. Why? Because we all know that the US is considered as the most powerful country in the world and they control most of the world. With Obama as president there's a great chance for change. Besides, it is his motto. To Make A Change and Do What Should Be Done. something like that. May not be the exact words but the thought.
Personally, Obama is my bet. because i can see greatness in him.
I really do hope he makes a change. According to Yahoo, Obama is facing the world's greatest financial crisis and 2 wars - in Iraq and in Afghanistan. I, or maybe the world, is hoping that Obama could find ways to resolve these crisis that's affecting the whole world. Besides, he's the newest powerful person in the whole world.
Right now, all i can say is. GOOD LUCK TO BARACK!

2nd Day at Work
Today is my second day at work. I'm getting the hang of it to be honest. A few more weeks and I'm a great manager. lol i haven't really started the hard work here. I'm just in front of the computer typing. surfing. whatever.
i'm still clueless of what to do. my mentor's not here to help me out. so i guess i'll be the sitting boss until my boss arrives

12 Simple Ways to Supercharge Your Brain
-ideas of Shine from Yahoo
Have ever felt stupid and ashamed when you bump into someone and absolutely can't remember their names? Well, i guess it happens to everyone.
Our brains sometimes do lapses. Everyday we indulge our brains with all the things that we do, see, feel, taste, etc. And while we take up those informations, the brain processes it. And it's done 24/7.
So, no matter how powerful our brains are, they need recuperation time to be kept in shape. Think about your car. When your car is being used all the time, you need to tune it up to secure its safety. Just like the brain, it needs tuning up. It's called Brain Maintenance.
Skipping this maintenance is like being lost in a parking lot because you forgot where you parked your car.
When you experience these kinds of things, then there are a few tips to improve your memory.
Here are some tips that can be done to begin the great brain tune up:
Eat Almonds
Almonds is believed to improve memory. If a combination of almond oil and milk is taken together before going to bed or right after getting up in the morning, it strengthens memory power. Almond milk is prepared by crushing the almonds without the outer cover and adding water and sugar into it.
I didn't know Almonds can improve the memory until now. I guess there's no harm in trying right? For us Filipinos, it's like eating "mani" right? We also believe that "mani" or nuts makes us smarter. I guess almonds are the counterpart of mani in America. Though Almonds are much better recommended for those who love their skin. Mani or nuts causes pimple or acne because they are cooked in oil.
Drink Apple Juice/Plainly Eat Apple
Besides the cliche, "An Apple a Day, Makes the Doctor Away", research shows that apple juice increases the production of the essential neurotransmitter acetylcholine in the brain, resulting in an increased memory power.
This i already know about. No wonder apple is healthy. The only question is, Pure Apple Juice or Commercially prepared Apple Juice? Of course, Pure Apple Juice. Wanna know why? Scroll down.
Sleep Well
During sleep, we rest. But our brains don't. Brains process themselves by replaying the images of the experience of the day. These repeated playbacks program the subconscious mind to store these images and other related information. PRECAUTION: too much sleep shortens memory power. though not totally proven.
Enjoy Simple Pleasures
Stress drains our brain power. A stress-ridden mind consumes much of our memory resources to leave us with a feeble mind. Make a habit to engage yourself in few simple pleasure everyday life has to offer to dissolve stress from your mind. Some of these simple pleasures are good for your mind, body and soul.
-enjoy the music you love
-play with your children, friends, family (brothers, sisters, parents)
-Appreciate others
-Run a few miles a day. Or maybe cycle or swim
-Start a blog
-Take a Yoga Class or go to the gym for a total wellness routine
Everyday for me is so stressful. I have to do this and that. Sometimes, doing nothing is also a stressor for me. I listen to music when i feel that way. or sleep. I even went to the gym before.
Exercise Your Mind
Apart from doing physical activities for our bodies, we also need to mentally exercise for a sharp and agile mind. Have you noticed that children have superior brainpower than adult does? for us Filipinos, eh yung term na tumatanda na. It's because children have playful minds and playful minds exhibit superior memory power. Engage yourself in some activities that require your mind to remain active and playful.
-Play scrabble, boggle or crossword puzzles
-Volunteer
-Interact with others. Interacting with others mean getting informations from other.
-Start a hobby such as blogging, reading, painting, or bird watching. Blogging and Reading doesn't just promote brainpower it also enhances your vocabulary. Though i never really thought bird watching can exercise the mind.
-Learn new skills or a foreign language
Practice Yoga or Meditation
Yoga and Meditation relieves the body of stress. Stress is known as a memory buster. With less stress, low blood pressure, slower respiration, slower metabolism, and released muscle tension follows. All of these factors contribute significantly towards increase in our brain power.
I never do Yoga. But i do meditation through breathing. Yoga is a complicated "exercise" that needs to flex your body in different poses. Breathing on the other hand is just done while seating in your office, standing somewhere. Deep breathing is different from shallow breaths that we do often. Deep breathing is done inhaling air to its limit and exhaling it to its limit. Try it and i assure you you're stress free. Oh and it's boring the first time, but gradually you'll love it when it show results.
Reduce Sugar Intake
Sugar is a non-food. Meaning it's not really healthy when taken in large amounts. It's a form of carbohydrate that offers illusionary energy, only to cause a downhill slump once the initial burst worn off. Excess intake of sugar results in neurotic symptoms. Excess intake in sugar causes claustrophobia, memory loss, and other neurotic disorders. Eat food without adding sugar.
This is why i said pure apple juice and not commercially prepared. C2, Nestea and the such are bottles full of sugar. Sugar not only causes neurotic disorders, but they also make you gain weight which everybody doesn't want right? Yes. So from now on, stay away from sugar.
Eat Whole Wheat
The whole wheat germs contain lecithin. Lecithin helps ease the problem of the hardening of the arteries, which oftens impair brain function.
Eat a Light Meal at Night
A heavy meal at night causes tossing and turning and a prolonged emotional stress while at sleep. It's wise to eat heavy meal during the day when our body is in motion to consume the heavy in-take. Eating a light meal with some fruits allows us to sleep well. A good night sleep strengthens our brainpower.
Develop the Imagination
Using the 5 senses makes it more easy to remember things with greater details.
Control your Temper
Bleached food, excess of starch or excess of white bread can lead to nerve grating effect. This results in a violent and some time depressive behavior. Eat fresh vegetables. Drink lots of water and meditate or practice yoga to relieve these toxic emotions of temper and stressful mood swings.
Take Vitamin B-complex
Vitamin B-complex strengthens memory power. Eat food and vegetables high in Vitamin B-complex. Stay away from the starch food or white bread, which depletes the Vitamin B-complex necessary for a healthy mind.
No wonders sometimes Pinoy are bobo, [I'm not exempted] because we eat a lot of rice which contains starch. I guess we should really slow down on rice.
So what do you think? These are not tough things to do. Actually they are basically simple. Try it. And see.

Managing
Now, i wish i studied managing. Today is the first day of my duty as manager in my uncle's gasoline station. Really. I was forced into it. Or should i say, nasilawan ako sa perang inoffer sa akin. I guess that makes me a certified mukhang pera. My mom offered my a job too. but i decided to take this job to challenge myself in doing something i thought i can't do. And rejecting mom's offer was hard. She's my mom. but what i thought was, di ako ma didisiplina if I take her offer. Why, you ask? Simple. I won't do my job correctly coz I know I'm the son of the owner.
At the back of my head, I regret accepting this job because I'm afraid of not doing what I'm suppose to be doing. Right now, I'm so clueless. I don't know what to do. I'm facing the monitor typing this coz I don't know what I will do. Manet is already here. She instructs people in doing this and that. It suppose to be my job. But she knows a lot more than i do. She's been here since the station opened. Damn! I feel like shit right now.
I'll be here for 8 long months if I'm not going to the states. I guess during that long time I will learn many things. And that's what I'm planning to do. learn. which is good. But really. I'm still hoping nanay would consider of bringing me to the states for vacation. ugh! sige na lang. i think tomorrow, my tita will accompany me in doing my job. anyway, i have to go. i will find work for me.
